Alcohol on private charters
Passengers of legal drinking age may bring and consume their own alcohol on a private charter in New York. The operator cannot sell it. If anyone in the group is under 21, no alcohol is permitted on board at all, and a reputable operator will check identification. This is not the operator being difficult; serving or permitting alcohol to a minor puts the operating licence at risk.
Smoking, vaping and cannabis
None of the three are permitted on board, including cannabis, which remains prohibited in a commercial vehicle regardless of state law. Comfort stops can be built into any itinerary.
Seating and capacity
Everyone must be seated while the vehicle is in motion. Capacity is a hard legal limit, not a suggestion, and a licensed operator will refuse to exceed it. Book the vehicle size for the actual headcount rather than hoping people squeeze in.
Deposits and damage
A refundable damage deposit is standard, typically $200 to $500 depending on the coach. It covers excessive cleaning, broken glassware and interior damage, and is returned within a few business days after a clean return. Ask what the cleaning threshold is before you book so there are no surprises.
Verifying the operator is legal
Ask for the DOT number and the TLC or state operating authority, and ask for a certificate of insurance. Any legitimate operator provides all three without hesitation. An operator that will not is one you should not book.
